My benz kompressor was running fine all day, stop/starting at several locations, and suddenly it died. ideas?

this was bizarre. I was driving it the entire day, no problems at all, stopped at a few different places, then suddenly when I drove it home and tried to start it up again, it wouldn't. The engine stuttered a bit, but that was it, though the AC/radio/lights, all else came on. Would this be a problem with the starter? Battery perhaps?
